Springfield Hotels
SpringfieldNo American can think of Springfield and not think of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States. He made Springfield his home until he left in 1861 to become president. But there’s more to Springfield than “Lincoln’s home town”. First of all, it is still a relatively small city, only about 120,000 living within the city proper. So it isn’t a crazy metropolis, humming with people. It retains its small town appeal, although it is the capital of Illinois. In fact, during June and July of 2009, Springfield will celebrate the 200th anniversary of Lincoln’s birth with a two month long “party”, with workshops, tours, and speakers to commemorate this great leader’s life. Many of the buildings where Lincoln worked and lived are still standing, lovingly preserved. But, like I said, Springfield isn’t only about Lincoln. There are museums and art galleries, including the Museum art Gallery, the Prairie Art Alliance, The Grand Army of the Republic Memorial Museum, and of course the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. For those of you who like the outdoors, there are hiking and biking trails, golf courses, water activities at lake Springfield including fishing, boating, and swimming, the lovely Adams Wildlife Sanctuary, the Henson Robinson Zoo, and Lincoln Memorial Garden and Nature Center, and the famous Washington Park Botanical Garden. Of course, with Springfield’s geographical location, it is the heart of the Prairie School art movement, and the city is dotted with art galleries and antiques shops that showcase this important American art period. And for when you get hungry, there are restaurants to suit any palate, whether you’re looking for Greek or Italian, or just some good old-fashioned mid-western cooking. And Springfield has nightlife to offer the night owls among you; whether you want to find a brewpub for a nice pint, or a rowdy sports bar from which to watch “the game”, or even a comedy club, where you can enjoy a drink and have a laugh, Springfield has it.
