Lombard Street

Lombard Street in San Francisco is famous for the steep section of the road that has many narrow windings. The street stretches from Presidio Boulevard east through the neighborhood of Cow Hollow. Twelve block of Lombard Street between Broderick Street and Van Ness Avenue is co signed US Route 101. The street continues through the city until it reaches Telegraph Hill. Lombard Street terminates up at The Embarcadero. The sharp, hairpin turns in Russian Hill between Leavenworth and Hyde streets have made the road famous as the “crookedest street in the world.” The turns were actually designed to reduce the hill’s 12° ca incline. This was, in 1922, overmuch steepy for vehicles and dangerous for pedestrians. The crooked section of Lombard Street is only about a fourth of a mile long, and it is reserved for one way traffic going downhill. It is paved with red bricks and the speed limit through this section is five miles an hour. Hotels in Lombard Street will put you right next to one of the most famous streets in the world.
