Coit Tower

Coit Tower was constructed in 1933 on the top of Telegraph Hill. It was funded by Lillie Hitchcock Coit in order to beautify the city. San Francisco received one third of her estate so that the city could use it in order to expand into a more beautiful area for the city. Many people believed that this tower was designed to mirror the image of the fire hose nozzle, but this was only a rumor. Many people got this idea because of Coit’s affinity to the San Francisco fire fighters back in her day. Coit Tower is an art deco tower that rises 210 feet above the hill. It is made of reinforced concrete that remains unpainted. It was designed by Henry Howard and Arthur Brown Jr. There are also murals inside that were painted by 26 different artists and many other assistants. The murals were part of the Public Works Art Project, a project that was part of the New Deal in order to help out artists who were struggling during the Great Depression. Hotels in the area of Coit Tower will provide a lovely view of the tower in the distance as well as the city. You will be able to enjoy many restaurants and shops in the area.
