Camera Obscura

When you come to San Francisco, there is a small, boxlike structure near the Cliff House that is an interesting tourist attraction. This is the Camera Obscura, a functioning relic of a different time. You can actually go into this giant camera for $1 entrance fee. It is a room that is no bigger than a phone booth, but you will be able to get a great view from the lens. The Camera Obscura was built in 1946 by Floyd Jennings on the observation deck behind Cliff House, the westernmost point in the city. The camera was built for the Playland at the Beach Amusement Park. This park, plus Cliff House and Sutro Baths where all owned by George Whitney. And while the amusement park was demolished more than thirty years ago, the camera remains a relic of time gone by, overlooking the ocean beach and slightly hidden just behind Cliff House. Hotels in the vicinity of the Camera Obscura are full of amenities and put your right next to the beach.
