Alcatraz

Alcatraz is an island in the middle of San Francisco Bay. It served at one time as a lighthouse, before being used as a military fortification. After that, it was turned into a military prison and then a federal prison by 1963. After the prison close in 1972, the island became a national recreation area and now is a landmark designation. The island is owned and operated by the National Park Service and belongs to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Alcatraz is open for tours throughout the year. Visitors are able to reach the island by a ferry ride from Pier 33, which is located near Fisherman’s Wharf. While Alcatraz has served many uses, the most famous of these are the military and federal prisons that were located on the island. Many people come and view Alcatraz: for there were many famous prisoners held here. There is also an attraction to the island because of all the fantastic escape stories, both real and in popular culture. While there are no hotels on Alcatraz, there are many hotels near the pier where you can hop on the ferry to go to Alcatraz any time of the day. One a clear day, the island is also visible from the pier.
