49-Mile Drive

The 49-Mile Drive is a scenic drive through many areas of San Francisco that highlight most of the city’s major historic buildings, monuments, and major tourist attractions. It opened in 1938 as a promotion for the Golden Gate International Exposition. This feature the very new (at the time) Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay Bridge. The drive ended at the fairgrounds on Treasure Island. The drive actually started out as a fifty mile drive, but was quickly changed to the 49- Mile Drive so that the city would be able to use the more meaningful number to pay homage to the gold rush of 1849. The routes winds through the city, and there are many 49-Miles Scenic Drive signs that will guide your through the trek, although some of the signs are mining due to theft. The drive has also been featured in many pop culture references, including the Randy Quaid – Geena Davis movie Quick Change. There are hotels in San Francisco located throughout the route of the 49-Mile Drive. Any major tourist attraction that you want to see will be on this trip, so it is ideal to get a hotel that it located in one of these areas as well.
