Upper West Side

The Upper West Side is a neighborhood on New York City’s island of Manhattan. It is located between Central Park and the Hudson River, above West 59th Street. Unlike other parts of the city, whose boundaries are approximate at best, the Upper West Side is a very specific part of New York. It is primarily residential, almost like a suburb for those who work in mid and downtown Manhattan. Though all of Manhattan is considered “upscale” (with the exception of certain parts of Harlem and downtown), the Upper West Side sets the standard for the rest, and is proud to be home to more liberal and artistic fold than the equally upscale Upper East Side, which is perceived by some to be more conservative and stodgy. There are many sites to see in the Upper West Side, such as Columbia University, Grant’s Tomb, and the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine. Lincoln Center and Columbus Circle, as well, are considered to be part of the Upper East Side; in general, it is the sunny, open section of Manhattan, with pleasant architecture and wide, leafy Avenues. It is home to Riverside Park, which stretches along the Hudson River, and is a beautiful place to take in both the city and the river itself.
