United Nations HeadquartersGeneral Info The United Nations Headquarters is a beautiful complex of buildings located in the “Turtle Bay” neighborhood of Manhattan’s East Side, overlooking the East River. Its actual address is First Avenue at 46th Street. It was completed in 1950, and has served as headquarters for the United Nations since then. Though it is located in the United States, it is considered for diplomatic purposes as international territory; that is to say that the laws of the United States don’t necessarily apply to those who work there. Though there was some controversy over its style when it was built, the complex, and in particular the Secretariat, have become popular landmarks in the modern architectural style. The UN offers guided tours Monday through Friday, with no reservations necessary for a group smaller than 12 people. The tours are available in all languages, though you must call in advance if you want a tour in a language other than English. Children under the age of five will not be admitted to the tour, and special accommodations can be made for tours of school-aged children. The tour will take you to all public areas of the UN, and the guides will take questions all along the tour, which generally lasts approximately 45 minutes.
