Theater DistrictGeneral Info The theatre proliferation in the Theatre District area started when the Metropolitan Opera House was moved to Broadway in 1883. In the 20s of the 20th century the first movie theatres boosted the charm of the Theatre District area and the various signs, gained to this area the name of "Great White Way". In Theatre District area you will find Times Square, a modern wonder that by night becomes amazing thanks to the neon advertisement signs that are one of the square's most peculiar characteristics, that was named after the tower of the New York Times. You must not miss the Rockefeller Centre that in 1985 was officially recognized as a National Monument by the N.Y.C. Landmark Preservation Commission.  Columbia University, NY
