The Brooklyn Museum

The Brooklyn Museum is the second largest art museum in New York City, and is conveniently and centrally located in the borough of Brooklyn.  It houses masterpieces, which range from ancient Egyptian artifacts to contemporary art from cultures all over the world.  Like most things in New York City, the Brooklyn Museum is easily accessible by public transportation.  It is located at 200 Eastern Parkway at Washington Avenue.   The museum has been open since 1897, and has had its fair share of controversy over the years over some of its more daring exhibitions.  

In addition to its numerous permanent installations, there are always five or six new exhibitions, and it’s best to check before going to see what will be there when you are.  There is a museum shop, which offers a variety of art, and museum related curios, and a museum cafe, so you don’t have the bother of having to leave for lunch, then return.  However, if you want to leave, there are restaurants within walking distance of the museum.  Guided tours are available in numerous languages, though you should call and book these in advance.  Individual walking tours are available with headsets for a modest fee.  The museum can also accommodate visitors with disabilities, though, again, it’s best to call ahead for this.
