Staten Island

Staten Island is the name both of the island itself, and of the borough of New York City which is located on it.  Although is it geographically closer to the state of New Jersey, Staten Island incorporated into New York City in January of 1898.  It is the most suburban of the five boroughs, being mostly residential.  The majority of the people who live on Staten Island commute to New Jersey or Manhattan to work.  Though it is connected to Brooklyn and New Jersey via bridge, there is still no direct surface connection to the island of Manhattan, and this trip can only be made directly via the famous Staten Island Ferry, which provides some of the most spectacular views of the city skyline.  In fact, some tourists travel to Staten Island specifically so that they can take the ferry back to Manhattan and enjoy the view. But there’s more to Staten Island than a ferry.  It is home to Fort Wadsworth National Recreation Area, one of the oldest military sites in the US, along with the Garibaldi Meucci Museum and Historic Richmond Town, a living history museum.  There is also the National Lighthouse Museum, and the New York Chinese Scholar’s Museum.  Staten Island is a place, which can be enjoyed on its own merits!
