Seaport

General Info

The South Street Seaport is the perfect location for a Sunday walk in New York. The marine museum, the sail ships, the fascinating view on the Brooklyn Bridge and a shopping center attract New Yorkers and tourists. Here you take the water taxi to Brooklyn. The history of the port is linked to the Schermerhons, ship owners family and traders who transformed the area in a bustling small town. The modernization at the end of the ‘900 caused the area almost to disappear however in the sixties a group of new Yorkers protested demanding to preserve this area and they even obtained the creation of a museum. Since then the traditional town houses were safe and the sailing ships came back. Nowadays the Seaport and Civic Center area is the centre of New York's Justice Courts; here you will find also the City's Police Department. This area is rich of majestic examples of architecture of various centuries, from Saint Paul's Cathedral from the 18th century, that is the oldest building in New York, to the City Hall from the 19th century. In the 1800 South Street Seaport was called the "Sail Street" for the huge number of vessels that were docked at the port. This dock became useless when the sail vessel became too expensive. North from this area you will find the Brooklyn Bridge, once the biggest hanging bridge in the world.
