Queens

Queens is geographically the largest of New York City’s five boroughs.  It lies directly to the east of Manhattan, across the East River.  Although it is located on the western end of Long Island, people from Queens don’t think of themselves as “Long Islanders”, but rather as “New Yorkers”.  Long Island unofficially begins just east of Queens.  It was incorporated into New York City in 1898. Queens is home to the US Open Tennis Tournament, which is held in Flushing Meadows each year.  It is also home to the New York Mets, one of the most famous baseball teams in the world.  Both of New York’s major airports are also located in Queens.  In Queens you can also visit the Queens Museum of Art, which contains an incredible scale model of the entire city, each tiny piece done in painstaking detail.  The workmanship on the model is so fine that specific houses can be seen.  The symbol of Queens is the Unisphere, a giant globe in Flushing Meadows that has been there since the World’s Fair of 1964.  It is an astounding monument, large in scope.  There is also the Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden, an oasis of food, drink, and song in this vibrant and busy city.  Queens has something for everyone.
