Morningside Heights

Morningside Heights is a neighborhood located in Manhattan’s Upper West Side, and home to Columbia University, Barnard College, Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, and Riverside Church, to name just a few. Neighborhood boundaries in Manhattan are always in a state of flux, and it has only been in recent years that Morningside Heights has been able to call itself part of the tony Upper West Side. It is close to Harlem, but the push of the affluent into the neighborhoods of Morningside Heights has shifted boundary lines somewhat. It is one of the areas of Manhattan that is considered to have become “gentrified” in recent years. Though Manhattan is strewn with places which have been made famous through film and television, Morningside Heights is home to one of the most well known--it is the home of Tom’s Restaurant, which was the title locale in Suzanne Vega’s song “Tom’s Diner”. It was also the hangout of the gang from Seinfeld, an extremely popular television show that ran through the eighties and nineties. There are also numerous coffee bars, which had their heyday in the sixties. The proximity of numerous educational institutions has kept this section of Manhattan upbeat and up to date. Morningside Heights was also the birthplace of George Gershwin and Cecil B. DeMille.
