The Museum of Modern Art, popularly called the MoMA of New York City, was established in the Big Apple City in 1929, and stands today as the premier museum in the world for modern art of all kinds. Located on 53rd Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues, the MoMA is centrally located in mid-town Manhattan, and must be included on any travel agenda. The MoMA has an incredible archive of over 300,000 books in addition to its exhibits of modern painting, sculpture, design, and even film media.
The MoMA was established by Abby Rockefeller, wife of John D. Rockefeller, but none of the Rockefeller money was used to fund either the founding or the ensuing upkeep and expansion of the museum. It is home to some of the most famous works of art in the world, including Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh, The Bather by Henri Cezanne, The Sleeping Gypsy by Henri Rousseau, and the iconic Les Demoiselles d’Avignon by Pablo Picasso.
There are numerous MoMA shops, some within the building, which require admission to the museum to access, others scattered throughout New York City and the world. There are also no fewer than three restaurants located within the museum itself, so it isn’t necessary to interrupt your tour of the museum just because it’s lunchtime. Indeed, a day won’t be enough to see all you want to see.
