Lower East Side

The Lower East Side is the ethnic quarter in Manhattan. Here Chinese, Jews and Italians established themselves creating little island in the city where the kept alive the uses, the language and the habits or their countries. Today this area has suffered an invasion of immigrants from different countries but the spirit that animates this area is still alive. Little Italy and Chinatown live side by side with the Eldrige Street Synagogue, first temple built in the United States from European Jews, and, as another example of multicultural openness of the quarter, the Eastern States Buddhist Temple. Some corners of this area are known thanks to the gangsters who lived here, two examples are the Bloody Angle and Umberto's Clam House, an Italian restaurant where in 1972 the boss Joey Gallo was shoot to death.
