Grand Central Terminal

Though its real name is Grand Central Terminal, with “Terminal” used the way Europeans use it regarding train stations, to indicate a “one way in, one way out”, large station, most people simply call it “Grand Central Station”. It is the largest and busiest train station in the world, with 48 platforms, which are home to 75 tracks. It is located on 42nd Street at Park Avenue, and is so beautiful and important that it has been declared a historical landmark. Completed in its current state in 1913, Grand Central has been the hub of NYC’s train system ever since. Grand Central was nearly destroyed in the 1970s, but was saved from the bulldozer thanks in large part to Jackie Kennedy Onassis, who spearheaded efforts to save the beautiful old buildings of New York. It has now of course been re furbished and restored to its former luster, and even has an elegant cafe in additions to its other eateries. There are both guided and self-guided walking tours available of Grand Central. The guided tours are available seven days a week, and last about one hour. This tour covers the history and architecture of the station, beginning with its inception and going all the way to the present. Due to its popularity, an advance booking of such tours is strongly recommended.
