Garment District

The Garment District is a neighborhood in downtown Manhattan, roughly bordered by Fifth Avenue, 34th Street, Ninth Avenue, and 42nd Street.  Though it only covers a square mile or so, it has been known for the last hundred years as “the garment district”, and is arguably the center of fashion design and clothing manufacturing.  Most of the world’s most famous and sought after designers, including Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, Nicole Miller, and Dolce and Gabbana, just to name a few, have businesses there.  This concentration of couture houses and wholesalers make this part of New York a shopper’s paradise.  Many of the shops are clustered by product, making marathon shopping even easier. There are many other sites worth seeing within this district as well; this being Manhattan, everything is close to everything else; if you choose, you can spend the morning shopping in the Garment District, then go to the Empire State Building for the afternoon.  This section of NYC is filled with restaurants as well, so you can take a short food break, and then continue with your shopping!  And it is home to the world famous Fashion Week Show as well, though tickets for this are very hard to come by.  The Garment District is a fascinating look at the fashion industry today.
