Fifth Avenue

Fifth Avenue is probably the most famous street in the world; it is synonymous with wealth, culture, and luxury, and rightly so.  It is popularly considered to be “the most expensive street in the world”, and yet walking down it is free.  Fifth Avenue begins at Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village, in the downtown area of Manhattan.  It is marked by an arch.  It runs north from that point, along the east side of Central Park, all the way through Harlem, where it dead ends at the Harlem River. Fifth Avenue is the most renowned shopping street in the world.  It is home to Saks Fifth Avenue, FAO Schwarz, and of course the iconic jewelry store immortalized by Audrey Hepburn, Tiffany’s.  However, Fifth Avenue didn’t start this way; it began as a predominantly residential street, which gradually gave up its houses and grew wider to accommodate the businesses, which flocked there in the early part of the twentieth century.  Other landmarks along Fifth Avenue are the Empire State Building, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Vanderbilt mansion.  The retail establishments on Fifth Avenue are endless, but include, Lord & Taylor, Henry Winston, Versace, Kenneth Cole, and Cartier, to name a very few.  Bring your pocketbook when you come to Fifth Avenue.
