Empire State BuildingGeneral Info The Empire State Building is one of the most famous symbols of New York City and America, second perhaps only to the Statue of Liberty in recognizability. It is located at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and West 34th St., and its name comes from New York’s nickname, “The Empire State”. Completed in 1931, it was the tallest building in the world for over forty years, until the completion of the World Trade Center’s North Tower in 1972. With the unfortunate destruction of the tower in 2001, the Empire State Building became the tallest building in both New York City and New York State. It is an architectural masterpiece in the art deco style, and has among its many beautiful features a three-story lobby, and a classic art deco pinnacle and tower. While most of the Empire State Building is devoted to office space, of course it derives significant revenue from sightseers. There is an indoor/outdoor observation deck on the 86th floor, which offers a staggering 360-degree view of the city. There is a much smaller observatory on the 102nd floor, which takes over a minute’s ride in a special elevator to reach. The lines to get to these floors are usually very long, so expect quite a wait, especially during “high” tourist season (summer). View north-northeast from Empire State Building by H. C.
