The Chrysler Building stands side by side with the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building as symbols of New York City. It is one of the city’s original skyscrapers, built in the Art Deco style. It stands at the intersection of 42nd Street and Lexington Avenue, and stands at approximately 1,050 feet. It was the world’s tallest building until the Empire State Building surpassed it in 1931, but it remains to this day the world’s tallest brick building. In addition, it is considered by many architects to be one of the finest examples of the Art Deco style on the planet. The building was designed and built to house the Chrysler Corporation, and elements of its design were based on ornamentation being used on Chrysler automobiles at the time. Some of the corners of the buildings look like hood ornaments, while still others resemble Chrysler radiator caps. While there is no observation deck or organized tours, the lobby is gorgeous, and it is open to the public. There is a stunning ceiling mural that makes the visit worthwhile all by itself. Most people would rather walk a few blocks away and take photographs of it, or even walk to the Brooklyn Bridge for a really great view.
