ChelseaGeneral Info Thanks to the overhead railway built in 1870 Chelsea area became a commercial area. It soon became a ill reputed zone, called "Tenderloin District" thanks to the ball rooms and to the brothels that sprung. Thanks to the opening of Macy's in 1901 Chelsea area gained new respectability and now the area near the department stores and Seventh Avenue is known as "Fashion Avenue". In Chelsea you will find the Madison Square Garden and, on the famous Fifth Avenue, one of the symbols of New York: the Empire State Building.  Fire seen from Emp. St. Bld.
