Brooklyn Bridge

The Brooklyn Bridge, an iconic symbol of New York City, spans the East River, connecting the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn. When it was completed in May of 1883, it was the largest suspension bridge in the entire world. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1964. At one point it carried streetcars, but its use is now limited to cars in the main lanes, and pedestrians and bicycles along the raised center. It is approximately 5,990 feet across, and takes about 45 minutes to walk from one end to the other. Construction of the bridge began in January of 1870, and took about 13 years to complete. It was designed by German born John Roebling, who lived in New Jersey at the time. When he died of tetanus, his son, Washington, took over construction, but he was soon stricken by rickets, and became unable to continue in his active role. Washington’s wife, Emily, learned the engineering and mathematics necessary to be his aide, and she was actually the first person to walk across the bridge. Crossing the bridge on foot offers a unique view of New York City, as one can see Brooklyn, Manhattan, Staten Island, and Queens from its span. A visit to the Brooklyn Bridge is a “must” for anyone visiting New York City.
