Bronx

The Bronx is the northernmost of New York City’s five boroughs, located just to the south of Westchester County.  It is home to Yankee Stadium, and has a rich history, along with many other landmarks.  It stood as its own city until 1898, when, along with the other four boroughs, it incorporated to form what is now known as New York City.  It is separated from Manhattan by the Harlem River. The Bronx is a mixture of the affluent and the blue collar, with wealthy neighborhoods and the working class poor living sometimes side-by-side.  In the past, the Bronx was known for its colorful ethnic neighborhoods, and it was home to such varied people as Willa Cather and inventor Jordan Mott.  The Bronx had an exciting history during the Prohibition days, as German and Polish immigrants brewed up “bathtub gin” and illegal whiskey.  It is home to the world famous New York Botanical Gardens and the equally famous Bronx Zoo.  In addition, you can find Wave Hill, a 30-acre estate of public gardens that attracts horticulturists from around the world.  Wave Hill has been designed so that there is something in bloom all year round.  The Bronx is also home to the world famous and prestigious Bronx High School of Science.
