The Houston Arboretum and Nature Center are built on the former grounds of Camp Logan, an army World War I training camp. In 1924, the military deeded the land to the city of Houston with the idea that it would be set aside and developed into a park to honor the memory of the fallen soldiers of the first World War. In 1951, 265 acres of land was set aside as an arboretum, natural reservation, and botanical garden. Roads and people have since reduced the size of the reservation, but it still stands at an impressive 155 acres of lush plant and forest life.
