Columbia Hotels
ColumbiaColumbia, Missouri, is one of those hidden gems that, once discovered, has to be visited again and again. It is relatively small, with approximately 175,000 people, and has a certain vibrancy, perhaps due to the presence of the University of Missouri, Columbia College, and Stevens College. College towns have an energy all their own, and Columbia is no different. Although it is located in the South, it is very liberal, with all of the accouterments that such a label brings. It is very avant-garde in its approach to the arts, and there are many highly touted festivals throughout the year, like the Twilight Festival, held in June and September, which features live music and various cultural activities in the downtown area. There are museums and art galleries everywhere, to cover just about every significant period, such as the Columbia Art League Gallery, Davis Art Gallery, the Missouri Art Gallery, and the Museum of Anthropology, to name a few. Columbia also has a very active Audubon Society, for the bird watchers among you. There is beautiful architecture, most notably the Gothic Memorial Union Tower. And, since it is the quintessential “college town”, there is nightlife, everywhere you look. Whether it’s live jazz at a small club, or a singer at a coffee bar, or classical music with the Columbia Civic Orchestra, you can see a different act every night of the week if you want. There are over thirty live performance theaters, as well, so, whether you feel like a musical or a drama, there will always be something for you. And, again, a college town offers a plethora of choices in dining, from Mexican to Chinese, from French to organic vegan; you will not go hungry in Columbia. And if you’re tired, there’s literally some sort of coffee shop/snack bar on every street, so cool your heels with a latte and watch the world go by for a while...
