Albany Hotels
AlbanyWhen people think of New York state, they automatically think of New York City, which is known as the unofficial capital of the world; however, Albany is the actual capital of the state of New York, and offers a charm all its own. Sitting on the banks of the Hudson River, Albany is a beautiful city of approximately 100,000 people. It is home to all of the beautiful government buildings that keep the state of New York running, and it has a long history merchant sailing, having historically been a major outpost for river shipping routes through New England and Canada. In fact, the New York State Capitol Building looks like gingerbread house, and is a gorgeous example of the architecture and history you’ll find in Albany. Albany is also home to the New York State Museum, one of the finest museums along the eastern seaboard. If you want to get in touch with your Bohemian side, there’s Lark Street, home to galleries, coffee shops, restaurants, and boutiques, and often called the Greenwich Village of Albany. In the spring, Albany hosts the annual Tulip Festival, where thousands of blooms can be seen. There’s city life, with shopping and urban activities like eating, dancing, and concerts of every kind, from jazz to classical, but Albany also offers a host of outdoor activities as well. There are the beautiful Cohoes Falls, and the Cohoes Farmers Market, open during the spring and summer, and there are ships on the Hudson that have been converted to museums showcasing the Hudson River Valley and Albany’s contributions to American colonial history. There’s live theatre, outdoor theatre, boating, live music, tours by bus, bicycle, maps for individual walking tours, you’ll easily find plenty to do in Albany, either as a destination, or as a stop between NYC and Boston, Niagara Falls, and all points north.
