When visiting Istanbul, it is a worthwhile trip to the district of Harbiye to see the Military Museum with exhibits covering the history of the military of the Ottoman Empire. The Military Museum is open to the public daily, and has exhibits that will interest all types. In addition to the military artifacts and exhibits, you will be treated to one of the world’s oldest military marching bands in the world, the Ottoman Mehter Troop. The Mehter performs twice daily in the afternoon, and is an impressive display of musical prowess, as well as an interesting view of the pride and history of this long-lived tradition of military musicianship. The Ottoman Empire was one of the first groups to bring musicians along as part of their military to help to rally the troops to battle, and improve morale during the ranks on the long marches during the periods of empire and conquest. The band itself is comprised of kettledrums, cymbals, and oboes, and is quite a spectacle of sight and sound that you will remember long after you have journeyed to Istanbul.
