Stockholm Hotels
StockholmStockholm is the capital of Sweden, and the city with the largest population in the entire country, with about 800,000 people living in the city proper. It has been the center of politics and culture in Sweden since the early 13th century, and, as a result, it has impeccably maintained buildings dating back to the Middle Ages. Stockholm is spread out over fourteen islands along the Stockholm Sound, and because of this, there is water everywhere; in fact, many people prefer to tour Stockholm by boat or hydrofoil. There are of course bus tours as well, and many sights can be seen by walking tour. Many of the museums are concentrated in one area, and one can easily spend days looking at all of them, from the famous Museum of History and National Museum, to smaller museums specializing in an eclectic mixture of culture and history. Stockholm is also home to Skansen, the world’s oldest open-air museum, and it includes a zoo which houses animals specific to nordic ecosystems. As the largest city in the country, Stockholm offers theaters, live shows, concerts, and art exhibitions. Going to the Gamia Stan, or Old City, is like stepping back in time; there are narrow cobblestoned streets and beautifully preserved buildings. But Stockholm isn’t just about history; it is a cosmopolitan, urban city, with beautiful modern architecture and the most up to date trends in dress, entertainment, and dining. There are restaurants reflecting every ethnicity, and nightclubs and pubs that rollick all night long. And if you want to shop, Stockholm has shopping in nearly every part of the city, whether it be large department stores or small, upscale boutiques, or hidden away vintage clothing and antiques shops. There are many stores that specialize in just selling world famous Swedish glass. There is a large disparity in the daylight hours in Stockholm (summer solstice is about 18 hours of daylight, whereas winter solstice has only about 6 hours of daylight).
