When one considers a visit to Portugal you would make a big mistake by not stopping by the beautiful town of Albufeira. Nearly 352 km southeast of Lisbon, this cliff-side town’s lazy-life, sunshine, and beaches make Albufeira a perfect getaway for young people looking for that unique tourist destination. For a town of its size, with just 19,500 residents, there are plenty of places to stay. The hotels and inns in Albufeira are unique and most do not even look like hotels. Many of the hotels in this resort town blend in well with the Albufeira community. If you want to be close to the beach you will find plenty of hotels in Albufeira just feet away from the water. Albufeira, which means “the lagoon” in Arabic, is a quaint town with a population of only 19,500 people. Of course since Albufeira is popular among tourist, this population swells considerably during the summer. Built on a hillside, steep streets lined with villas, Albufeira reminds the visitor more of a North African seaside village than a town on the coast of Portugal. Amateur photographers will find plenty of scenes worthy of postcards, from the colorful boats in the bay, to the unique orange-tiled roofs of the capacious villas. If you bring the family with you it is almost certain you will find yourself at the Zoo Marine. The Zoo Marine is a popular water park in Albufeira with rides, swimming pools, gardens, and dolphin shows. When you get tired of the Zoo Marine make sure you stop by one of the restaurants to try the town specialty, cataplana (steamed shellfish). Even if you don’t try the cataplana make sure to sample the traditional Portuguese dishes. When at last you are done with dinner, stop on by the Falan or Fastnet Bars and dance the night away. The bars don’t close until 4am so you’ll have plenty of time to make new friends and learn the traditional dances of the region.
