Krakow, or Cracow, is one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in Poland. It is located in southern Poland, along the Vistula River, and has a population of approximately 800,000 people within the city proper. In 1978 it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and draws over five million tourists per year. Through luck and geography, Krakow avoided the worst of the bombing in Second World War and many of its buildings survived the war. It has a striking old world beauty, and you truly feel like you’re stepping back in time when you visit Krakow. It is the location of one of the oldest universities in Europe, and has long been a gathering place of great minds and intellectuals. The Jewish district and the Old Town are packed with ambience and character, full of coffee bars and pubs, where you can sit with a drink and watch the world go by. Must see monuments include the 14th century St. Mary’s Basilica and the Wawel Royal Castle. There is a huge, 10 square acre market in the center of town, where St. Mary’s is located. It is a market that has everything, from a cloth market to fresh flower vendors to ice cream stands. There are cafes and boutiques that sell everything from souvenirs to clothing. There’s also the Galicia Jewish Museum, the Krakow Zoo and numerous public parks and gardens. After the sun goes down, Krakow really comes to life. It is said by some to have the highest concentration of bars per square mile of any city in the world, and this is easy to believe if you go there. There are pubs, nightclubs, dance clubs, and live music everywhere. Krakow is a cosmopolitan city, and this is reflected in its cuisine. From traditional pierogies that can be purchased from vendors on the streets, to the opulent, full service restaurants along the river, there is food for any palate and any budget. And there are photo opportunities everywhere in this magnificent city, from the fountains, to the bridges, to the ruins, to the restored churches, there is beauty all around.
