Zuiderkerk

Built in the 17th century, the Zuiderkerk, or South Church, of Amsterdam is the first Protestant church established in the city. It is a fine example Renaissance style of architecture, designed and built by renowned Dutch architect Hendrick de Keyser. Some believe the Zuiderkerk served as an inspiration to the architect of St. Paul’s Cathedral of London, and it has been inspired the minds and canvasses of such great painters as Monet. Three children of the famed Dutch artist Rembrandt were buried at the Zuiderkerk, and its significance to both Amsterdam, and the Protestant church is unquestioned. The tower of the Zuiderkerk can be seen from a distance, and is perhaps the most distinctive feature of the building. It is intricately detailed, and towers above the church itself, complete with an ornate clock face, and a carillon of bells that ring out through the town every Sunday. During the summer, the tower is also open to the public, and affords breathtaking views of Amsterdam for those that are willing to climb to the top. Services are no longer held in the Zuiderkerk, but its halls are open to the public for tours and exploration.
