Westerpark

Built in the 1890’s, and located near Central Station, the Westerpark is a lovely site for spending a day relaxing in the lush gardens of one of Amsterdam’s premier parks. Canals flow through its rolling greens, while willows sway peacefully in the breeze. The Westerpark is a perfect spot for a leisurely boat ride down the canals, or a bicycle ride along one of the many footpaths, or a picnic with a friend or family. It is a wonderful setting to relax and unwind and take in the natural beauty of one of Amsterdam’s most scenic parks. In 2003, a new section of the Westerpark was built and a new age in the allure of the Westerpark began. Today, the new area of the Westerpark stands as a near opposite to the lush and green beauty of the “Classic” Westerpark; it has a much edgier feel, and is intended to attract a more avant-garde crowd. The Westerpark has become a venue for some of the most well known musicians, such as Radiohead and R.E.M., and concerts are regularly held in its open-air stage theater. Young artists and students flock to this site, with its art house cinema and cafes and distinctive suburban vibe.
