Westerkerk

Built in the early 1600’s, the Westerkerk, or West Church, boasts of the tallest church tower in all of Amsterdam, and is truly a breathtaking site for any visitor to the area. Master architect Hendrick de Keyser, designer of many of the buildings in Amsterdam during the Dutch Golden Age, crafted the Westerkerk for the Protestant Church in the Gothic style, and its towering spire looms to this day over the Amsterdam skyline. Legend states that the Westerkerk contains the unmarked grave of the great master Rembrandt, who is believed to have been buried there upon his death. Church services are still performed every Sunday, and the grand carillon bells are played every Tuesday at noon. If you get a hotel near Westerkerk, perhaps you can hear the bells from your room, or visit the nearby Anne Frank House, and hear the bells described in her diary as “peaceful.” At 85 meters tall, the tower is open to the public, and offers one of the best, and certainly one of the highest, vantage points in all of Amsterdam.
