Theater Carré

The Theater Carré was established as a circus theater by Oscar Carré in 1837, and has since become the premier venue for artistic and cultural performances in Amsterdam. It is the site for many of the significant performances by orchestras, classical musicians, dance troupes, and theatrical plays, and has been so for nearly two centuries. The grand elegance of the stage, and its detailed and elaborate ornamentation, recalls the days when theater was frequented by royalty, and was the height of cultural achievement in any city, including Amsterdam. Through the years, many great performers have graced this stage, and equally as many important figures have sat in the very same audience seats and enjoyed their performances. Watching a performance in this theater will feel like stepping back into those glory days of theater, and will be a treasured memory for years to come. In addition to being able to catch a show or performance, whether it is an opera, or ballet, or a classical pianist, the Theater Carré offers a guided tour of the historical building. You are shown all of the architectural elements of the building, complete with the historical significance to theater in Amsterdam. In addition, you are given a behind the curtain glimpse at the inner workings of a modern theater, complete with a tour of the backstage, the dressing rooms, and the stage itself.
