StoperaGeneral Info The Stopera, portmanteau word between "stadhuis" that in Dutch means "city hall" and opera, is probably the most controversial building in Amsterdam. Its construction began in 1982 and ended in 1986. Its history though goes back to 1915, when Amsterdam's administration felt the need for a new city hall and a new opera house. The actual building, which hosts Amsterdam’s city hall, the Netherlands Opera and the National Ballet, was designed by architect Cees Dam. When the construction began it met protests from representative of the liberal wing for its impact over the surrounding ambient and for its costs. Anyhow, this incredible building still stands near the monument in memory of the Jewish victims of World War II. The Opera building and townhall "Stopera".
