Royal Palace Amsterdam

When you visit Dam square in Amsterdam, you are definitely going to see the Royal Palace of Amsterdam. Built in the 17th century, the Royal Palace was the largest building in Amsterdam that was not a church, and is a fine example of the architecture of the era. Designed by renowned architect Jacob van Campen, the Royal Palace was originally used as a city hall for Amsterdam, and today is open to the public for tours, and is occasionally used for official functions and entertaining. The annual Queen’s New Year ball/reception is held at the Royal Palace. The Royal Palace has been host to a number of artistic and historic exhibitions of art and antiquities throughout the years, and these installations change occasionally; the last exhibition was a collection of historical artifacts and information about the history of the Royal Palace from its inauguration over 350 years earlier. There are guided tours available, though these are not operating until 2009 due to an extensive renovation project; be sure to check with the tourism office at the Royal Palace if you are planning to visit before the renovations are scheduled to be completed.
