Rokin Street

One of the areas the is well known for its shopping boutiques in Amsterdam is the Rokin Street district. It has been a major thoroughfare since the early times in Amsterdam’s history, and runs along the former path of the Amstel River. It runs from Dam square to Muntplein Square, and is rich with both tourist sights to visit, as well as a wealth of shopping opportunities. From upscale shoe boutiques, to some of the finest cigar houses, including the Hajenius Tobacco shop at Rokin, you will find many unique shops that will keep you busy for hours. Between shopping at the various stores, you can enjoy a number of choices for dining along the strip, as well as taking in some of the historic monuments along the way. There is the Gothic house of composer Pieter Janszoon Sweelinck, and an impressive statue of Queen Wilhelmina on horseback. There are also a couple of museums along Rokin Street, including the Allard Pierson Museum, and the Arti et Amicitiae art gallery. If you are looking for a good place to stay in Amsterdam, there are also quite a few fine hotels directly on Rokin Street, and with the new metro station at Rokin, you will be in easy walking distance from the Amsterdam train system.
