Rijksmuseum

The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam (National Museum), formerly known as the National Kunst Gallerij (National Art Gallery) opened in its present location on the 13th of July of 1885. The Museum first opening was in The Havre, it was transferred to Amsterdam in 1808 under the orders of King Louis Napoleon. The first setting of the museum was the city's former town hall. Since the moving the collection of art work grew so largely that the need for a bigger exhibition area was soon urgent. Therefore a contest for the building of a new site for the Museum was held. The contest was won in 1876 by Pierre Cuypers. The project of the new building gives an idea of the Dutch history of architecture and design, many artists were employed to ad their art in the construction of the actual building. Apart from the principal collection called "The Masterpieces", with works from Rembrandt, Vermeer and other mayor Dutch artists, the museum harbors a huge selection of art that ranges from costume to furniture, from textiles to glassware.
