Oude Kerk

The Oude Kerk, the oldest church in the city of Amsterdam, rises right in De Wallen, which has become nowadays the heart of the ill reputed Red Light District. This church, consecrated in 1306, was built directly over a cemetery and, as a matter of fact, the Oude Kerk's floor is entirely paved with tombstones. The practice of burying Amsterdam's citizens in the premises of the church went on until 1865. The church underwent, over the centuries, several renovations and, for example, in 1390 the roof of the Oude Kerk gained immortal fame thanks to some Estonian planks that granted to the vault an incredible acoustics, perfect for the church's three pipe organs. If you visit the Oude Kerk do not forget to take a look at the Oudekerkersplein, where you might find some interesting pieces of contemporary art.
