Noorderkerk

Located in the heart of the Jordaan District of Amsterdam, the Noorderkerk is an active, and historically significant Protestant church. The church was originally built in the early 17th century, and was designed by the renowned Dutch architect Hendrick de Keyser, who also designed the Westerkerk and the Zuiderkerk. The Noorderkerk design was built with a more Gothic design, using the cross-shaped floor plan, and the peaked facades, than the other churches designed by de Keyser. The church also contains a lovely music hall, and is often the host to classical music concerts, as well as religious musical presentations. It is also still an active church with regular services, and is open to the public both for worship and touring. There is also a fully restored organ, which is now functional, and occasionally played during services. If you are visiting the Noorderkerk on a Saturday, you should consider stopping in at the nearby Noordermarkt Square for the open-air market, including an extensive organic farmer’s market.
