Nieuwmarkt

General Info

The Nieuwmarkt (or New Market), dominated by the De Waag, a castle built as a defensive post in the Middle Ages, has always been Amsterdam's central market. Nowadays the market selling natural products is held on Saturdays while on Sundays (in the summer months) in this square is held a flea market. The square is located in Amsterdam's Chinatown, right behind the Red Light District. If during WWII the square was used by Nazis as a collection point for Jews arrested and to be conveyed to the concentration camps, today the Nieuwmarkt offers a wide selection of cafés, pubs, little restaurants, shops. Here you will find the oldest chemist shop (est. in 1749) of Amsterdam which is still functioning in its original location. The Nieuwmarkt can be easily reached by underground (there is a subway stop just underneath the square).
