The complex of the Amstelhof, a former hospice built in the second half of the XVII century to house old ladies in need, has been chosen as the branch of the Hermitage in Amsterdam. When the board directing the museum decided to open a branch of the Hermitage somewhere in Europe, due to the fact that the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg is able to display only the five per cent of the beautiful pieces of its enormous collection, the perfect choice seemed to be Amsterdam.
The Hermitage in Amsterdam hosts exhibitions of works of art that don’t have any chance of being displayed in Saint Petersburg. Therefore, any time you'll visit Amsterdam, be sure to take a look at the current exhibition at the Hermitage Amsterdam.
