The Ets Haim Library of Amsterdam boasts to be the oldest active library of collected Jewish literature and historical documentation in the world. It was founded in the early 17th century, and contains over 30,000 printed works and manuscripts covering the subject of Judaism, and has been the central repository for Jewish studies in Amsterdam for nearly 400 years. Scholars have used this repository of collected works to study all aspects of Judaism for four centuries, and it is still one of the most respected collections of its kind in the world today.
The collection includes many Jewish works in their original Hebrew text, as well as some older Christian works in Aramaic and Hebrew. In addition to the collected written works, there is also a smaller collection of choral music. The library is open to the public at least two days a week, and for those who are visiting to study an area of the collection, the museum staff is available to arrange for special tours and visits to the library during its other hours by request.
