Amsterdam Waag

Built in 1488, the Amsterdam Waag, or Weighing House, began as one of the city gates when the city was still surrounded by a protective wall. When the wall was removed, the gate was converted to a weighing house, and was used to weigh goods that were to be traded in the newly established trader’s market, the Nieuwmarkt. All goods that were to be sold at market were weighed at this building, and taxes were levied based on the weights of the products to help fund the cost of maintaining the city. Today, the Waag is open to the public for tours and viewing, and the first floor has been converted to a café. Dinner in the café is particularly alluring, as it served with lighting provided by hundreds of candles in antique chandeliers. When touring the building, pay particular attention to the intricate brickwork of the Waag, as it once was the home of the Brick Layer’s Guild, and reflects the mastery of brick in its walls and intricate window treatments in brick. This building was truly built to stand up to just about anything, and it is a monument to solid Dutch craftsmanship and skill.
