Allard Pierson Museum

Amsterdam University’s Archaeological Museum is housed in the formed home of the Nederlandse Bank at Oude Turfmarkt 127. The museum, named after the first professor of Classical Archaeology of the University of Amsterdam, was founded in 1932, in a much smaller building placed at Sarphatistraat 129-131, and hosts artefacts from ancient Egypt, ancient Greece, the Roman Empire and so on. The first museum's collection was the original collection of Professor Pierson that grew thanks to purchases and donations. It was Pierson's son that decided, at his father's death, to give the opportunity to students to have the possibility to access his father personal collection, in order to make this dream came true he founded the Allard Pierson Foundation. It was only in 1976 that the museum moved to its actual location.
