Marrakech: If ever a city conjured images of the romantic Far East, it has to be Marrakech. The name alone brings to mind narrow, mysterious streets smelling of incense, exotic fruits sold on street corners, flower scented evening air... all of these things are true, too. Marrakech is a city of approximately 1,000,000 people located in southwestern Morocco, near the base of the famous Atlas Mountains. Marrakech is home to one of the busiest markets, or souks, on the African continent, along with one of the busiest squares, the Djemaa el Fna. This is a place straight out of the Arabian Nights, with musicians, magicians, snake charmers, henna artists, storytellers, and water sellers. When the sun goes down, it becomes a gigantic open-air restaurant. Marrakech is home to Koutoubia, a tall, beautiful mosque that dominates the skyline, and is spectacular in the sunset. In addition, there are the Aquedal Gardens, the Saadian Tombs, and the beautiful Bahia Palace. For museum lovers, there are both the Dar Si Said Museum, which places particular emphasis on Moroccan culture and Berber jewelry, and the Majorelle Museum, which houses an extensive of Islamic art. As far as nightlife, Marrakech really comes to life at night, and you can find French and Italian restaurants, as well as restaurants that serve classic Arabian and seafood dishes. Dinner is usually a late and long lasting affair in Marrakech, so be prepared to while away the night, with dinner running into the wee hours and becoming an evening of club hopping among the palm trees and stars. There are also day trips to be had, both into the desert and to the Atlas Mountains, the latter of which offer incredible views of the city and desert beyond. Going to Marrakech is like entering another world, a world of mystery, history, and beauty.
