Vilnius

Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania, a city located in the southeastern section of that country. It has a population of approximately 600,000 people, and has a rich history that dates back to the Middle Ages. The name and country inspire thoughts of an old place, steeped in history, and Vilnius is those things; however, it has a modern side, too. Located along the River Neris, Vilnius offers the full complement of water activities, from windsurfing to boating to just swimming. Vilnius has one of the oldest “Old Cities” in Europe, with architecture ranging from Gothic to Baroque to buildings dating back to medieval times. It has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, and for good reason. Walking in the Old City is like stepping back in time, to a place of narrow, cobbled streets, churches, and pub style restaurants still lit by lanterns. Vilnius is home to Vilnius University, established in the late 1500s; it houses one of the most extensive book collections in Eastern Europe. For those of you who want to explore the architecture, there are the Church of St. Peter and Paul, the Gates of Dawn, St. Anne’s Church, and Bernadine Church, just to name a few. The Church of St. Peter and Paul alone houses over 2,000 sculptures, so plan to spend a lot of time exploring this beautiful old city. At night, the bistros and eateries in the Old Town throw open their windows and become night clubs, or jazz halls, or pubs, and all of it blends perfectly with the old world charm of the Old City; however, there is a modern side to Vilnius as well; there are several skyscrapers and modern buildings in the newer part of town which house upscale, trendy couture houses as well as ultra modern boutiques. Whether you want to explore the past or dive into the future, Vilnius will have something for you to do.
