VeronaVerona, Italy is located on the northern edge of Italy, surrounding an area of the Adige River. It is an ancient town as well as a modern city. There are many reasons why Verona is famous, but most people will recognize the city’s name from the Shakespeare play “Romeo and Juliet”. But Verona is also an ancient city that still contains the ruins of one of the largest Roman amphitheaters in Italy. What you will see when you walk around the city of Verona are the many churches, old and new, that dot the landscape. The San Zeno Basilica is one sight to see with its white stone and bricks that are formed in alternating layers to complete the structure of the building. Many of the ancient Roman artifacts of the city of Verona still lie just under the surface of the ground. There are many cellars in houses that give the owners of the home a direct look into the past to see these rare artifacts. The Piazza Delle Erbe was rebuilt to incorporate some of these materials such as statues and marble blocks in order to show the world a sample of these magnificent finds. While in Verona you will want to stop by the Arena, most of which is still intact today. You can even see some public events still take place here, such as opera performances and theater productions. While in the area you will also want to check out the Porta Borsari, the archway that stands at the end of the Corso Porta Borsari. It is a gate that dates back to the third century and was the opening to the original Roman city walls. There is an inscription on the gate that dates it 245 AD. This is also the monument that gives the city its name: Colonia Verona Augusta. If you are interested in Medieval architecture, you will want to explore some of Verona’s old churches. There are basilicas and smaller churches that date back well into the medieval times and even further.
