Hotels near Cannaregio

General Info

Cannaregio is one of the historic districts of Venice. Because there are six of them, they are called Sestieri, and each has its own distinct ambience. Cannaregio is the largest of the sestieri in population, and is located in the northern section of Venice. It takes its name from Cannaregio Canal, which was the only method transport to mainland Italy until the construction in this century of a railroad along the same route. Some attractions in the Cannaregio district include the Venetian Ghetto, Palazzo Labia, and Museo Wagner, and the Isola de San Michele, an island cemetery. The Chiesa degli Scalzi, a lovely cathedral and square, is a popular place to spend a sunny day. It is only one of countless churches located in Cannaregio. The Palazzo Labia is a palace built in the baroque style, right on the Grand Canal. Inside is the famous ballroom with frescoes painted in the early 1700s by Giovanni Battisgta Tiepolo, and some very fine trompe l’oeil by Gerolamo Mengozzi-Colonna. Of course the Venetian Ghetto is anything but these days, but there are still monuments to the Jews who had to live there until liberated by Napoleon in the 1800s, and it is still considered the center of Jewish life in Venice. The buildings there are taller than in other parts of the city, because it was a walled off section with no room to grow but up.
